Winter Sports Preview 2020 - Brock Wilson

As the 2010s come to a close, our Winter sport athletes take time to reflect on their past experiences and how it will shape their upcoming seasons. The last decade for El Segundo High School sports has brought countless League Championships, multiple CIF titles, and a whole lot of joy. With the new decade approaching, the Eagles hope to add to their history and make the 20s the most memorable decade yet. After yet another Championship season, Boys Soccer put their CIF rings aside as they embark on a journey for another title. Two time CIF champion Christophe Charles returns to the field in quest for one more ring. “Losing many players from last year’s nearly undefeated team, I believe that the mindset of being able to overcome obstacles and work together in the face of adversity will help us integrate new players into our system”. Coming off an injury-riddled season and missing out on the CIF playoffs, Girls Soccer looks to bounce back for a strong year. Putting more emphasis on staying healthy, the Eagles have been working with trainer Katie Ostrovecky and physical trainers from Davis and Derosa. Senior starter Delaney Jones describes the teams preseason work, “We didn’t make CIF last year so we’ve been working to remedy our mistakes during the preseason so we’ll be more successful in the league this year”. After losing a majority of their starters, a new era of Eagles Boys Basketball is on the rise. Headlined by a group of rising talent, this new squad has both the veteran leadership and a young core to make a deep postseason run. Senior veteran Center Patrick Fallon “The hours in the gym, bus rides, and spending all day together at tournaments has really shaped our identity moving forward. In contrast to the past teams, we like to push the tempo and score a lot on offence combined with an aggressive defence which will help us as we set our eyes on becoming league champs and making a push in the CIF playoffs”. Similar to boys basketball, Girls Water Polo puts a new team of young talent into the pool this season. With only 4 returning seniors and the addition of a new coach, this bright young core looks to make strides this season with a long CIF run. Junior Christina Mullane comments “With so few girls of that team returning, it was definitely a way to restart and have a new, raw team. We now have the opportunity to relearn basics and get everyone on the same page, allowing us to successfully achieve our goals this year”. Coming off their first league championship in the school's history, Girls Basketball looks to continue their rise to the top. Starting Point Guard Hannah Chang reflects on last season, “We learned about the importance of teamwork and working hard. Winning league last year gives us more motivation to try and be better this year”. Thank you Eagles for a great 2019! We look forward to making the next decade even better than the last. See you next year!
